I have some of the same thoughts as Aileen, but also some different opinions. I think that we should not have to be in Iraq right now, but I think that we should be helping the people of the country the way we have. I have a special insight into what is happening there because of my dad, but most people do not have that. My dad tells me about the people that come up to him and his guys in the street and thank him for what they have done for them. I do, however, think that we should not have this recurring problem. I think we should have done what we went to do in Iraq during Desert Storm and we would not have lost all of the young people we have lost in the five years we have been in Iraq. I do not think that a draft should be put in place; I think that there should be enough opposition/support (whichever side you support) so that the majority should have their way.
I think that the “Operation Iraqi Freedom” was justified, but that we went in too fast and without a real strategy. After terrorists bomb out country and leave hundreds of people dead and even more people without friends and family members, we have every right to go into their land and try to seize weapons they did not even declare they had. If our President truly believed threat Iraq had WMD’s, then there was every reason to do what we did. However, if past generations and Presidencies had taken care of business at the time, there would be no reason to be in Iraq now.
I think that the people of Iraq are truly thankful for what the American Military has done in the direction of the pursuit to find Osama, and to rid the country of the people that would kill their own, such as Al Qauda. I do think that we should be beginning to pull out of Iraq, but we must leave in a much more stable way than we entered. As we leave, we must put in place an effective government, educational system, and assist the people after we leave. We have a new responsibility. Because we involved ourselves in the “civil war” in Iraq, we must leave our lifeline open at all times now. Even after we leave, we must help the people of Iraq to set up their own government, elect their president, and rebuild their country. We have to assist and give advice about setting up their education and establishing an entirely new way of life for their people. We must also make sure that extremist groups such as Al Qauda do not reclaim the rule of the country after we leave. In short, I support the war we have engaged in, I support the people fighting this war, but I wish we had gone about everything in a much more organized way so that we could pull out in a stable way by leaving a helpful mark in the history of Iraq.
